Rama and the Ramayana
Dasharatha is the loyal king of Aydohya. He has three wives and four sons. With his first wife, Kaushalya, he had his eldest son, Rama. With his second, and favorite wife, Queen Kaikei he had three sons,Bharata Lakshmam and Sharrughan. Rama and Bharta are blue.
Rama hits an apple in two that is hanging from a string *scene change*
Sita: Whoever can string the bow will be my husband
Rama strings bow and even breaks the bow in two.
Sita:Rama you are my husband!
*scene change*
King Dasharatha: It is now time that I must pass down the throne to my eldest son, Rama. The forest will be my new home as I seek moksha.
Rama: You are fulfulling Dharma by passing to throne to me, your eldest son
*scene change*
Queen Kaikeyi: But I want my son Bharata to rule the kingdom!
The king begs the queen to dismiss their oath
King Dasharatha: I must fulfuill our oath; Rama, is now banned for fourteen years, but you must tell him. I can not bear to bring him this news.
*scene change*
Queen Kaikeyi: Rama, you will not be crowned king. I banish you into the forest for fourteen years.
Rama obediently does as he is told *scene change*
Sita: I belong with you Rama! Please let me accompany you on your journey!
Lakshman: May I also accompany you?
Rama: Yes, you both may come with me.
Set off into the forest
*scene change*
Bharata: I do not want to break the rules of dharma! Rama should be king, not me!
Runs into forest to find Rama
*scene change*
Bharata: Rama please return and take your rightful place on the throne!
Rama: We must obey father.
Bharata takes Rama’s sandals
Bharata: I will put these on the throne, and every day I shall place the fruits of my work at the feet on my Lord.
Bharata hugs Rama and retuns to Aydohya
*scene change*
Lakshman: I am very unhappy with life in the forest, as are the rest of you.
Rama: I can not concentrate on my meditating with all of these rakshasas disturbing us.
Rama and Lakshman destroy evil creatures who disturb their meditations
A rakshasa princess attempts to seduce Rama, but Lakshmana wounds her and she runs away.
*scene change* Rakshasa(to Ravana): I went to a land called Sri Lanka, and there was a beautiful woman named Sita. Ravana: You know, I do have a weakness for beautiful women. We must abduct her.
*scene change*
A magical golden deer runs by Sita, Rama, and Lakshman
Rama draws a proctective circle around Sita
Rama: If you stay in this circle you will be safe while Lakshman and I go to hunt the deer!
*scene change*
Ravana is dressed as a begging holy man. Sita steps out of the circle to give him food, but he abducts her and takes her the the kingdom of Lanka.
*scene change*
Rama: Where is Sita! My heart is broken! Maybe these monkeys will help me find her!
*scene change*
Ravana takes Sita to his palace
Ravana: You must marry me!
Sita: Never! I only love Rama.
*scene change*
Hanuman king of the mokeys flys to Lanka
Hanuman: It is alright Sita, Rama will be here soon to save you.
*scene change*
Rama, Lakshman and the monkeys fight and kill Ravana and his army.
*scene change*
Rama: Sita, I will free you!
*scene change*
They return to Ayodhya
Rama: I am now king.
Rama’s rule is called Ram-raja. It is where everyone fulfuills their dharma, and is what Gandhi dreamed of for modern India.
